Now, I've used fresh floral foam. There is a dried version but I like to use this because it's softer and you can push the stems in easier. It's a lot easier to use.
This will fill it up a little more and create a backdrop for your flowers. These are artificial water chestnuts. I'm just going to make a collar around the edge of the bowl.
When you place your flowers or foliage in, you put it in a direct angle to the center of the vase so it splays out like that. You wouldn't put anything in that way if it was going there. You'd put it at that angle.
It just makes it look better and flow better. I'm going to put in some pretty phalaenopsis orchids. You'll need to use wire cutters.
Now, the wires in artificial flowers are very thick. You can use scissors but you'll probably damage them. Some floristry scissors have a wire cutter right at the end but even so you're better off with a pair of specially purchased wire cutters.
I'm going to use these, they're called butterfly orchids. Both of these actually look very, very real and I think that's an important thing. If you're choosing an artificial flower, choose something that is as close to the real thing as possible.
If you're putting them in a vase, just putting some stems in a vase, put some water in the bottom of it with a chlorine tablet or a sterilizing tablet, a baby sterilizing tablet, and change the water every now and again. If they look real, you can also put some fresh foliages in and then add a couple of artificial flowers and it looks real. You can trick your guests and friends.
So I'm just cutting off where those little petals have come off. So, the main sort of prominent flowers are the large phalaenopsis and these are the secondary. Put a little more foliage in, a little bit of ivy.
Not very Oriental, I suppose. Just to break it up a little because there's a little clump there of white, it's nice to see the individual flowers and foliage helps that and I think, one more there. Another good thing to do with a phalaenopsis stem, one of these, if you have an orchid plant that's lost its flowers and you're waiting for it to flower again, and you have about two leaves, you just buy one stem of orchid and prop it in, artificial orchid, until it starts growing again.
Because otherwise, you're not looking at very much other than a couple of leaves, most people don't know that trick. One more over there, and that is how you create artificial flower arrangements. .
